Join us for a seed harvesting event focused on early spring ephemeral wildflowers in our woodlands. Spring ephemerals are perennial woodland wildflowers which inhabit a short yet dazzling window of time in our forested areas, blooming and setting seed after the snow melts. Join PCC staff and fellow volunteers as we contribute efforts towards the protection and expansion of spring ephemeral species in our woodlands by collecting seed ready to harvest from these early blooming and short-lived spring plants. Seed harvest is an effective way to diversify local plant genetics and expand the spring ephemeral plant community across the Polk County Conservation parks system. Volunteers will get the opportunity to sharpen their plant identification skills through an educational hike through the forest, learn about the significance of this habitat, and enjoy a day lending a helping hand in a beautiful county park. *We are excited to offer this new volunteer opportunity. As we explore the world of harvesting spring ephemeral seed, please note that this is a learning experience for our staff. If we find that seed is not ready to harvest or that we have already reached the threshold of a sustainable harvest, we will shift from our plant identification hike into invasive plant species removal for a rewarding day of conservation in our woodlands. - Learn to identify native Iowa ephemeral species - Harvest sustainable quantities of available species - Remove invasive species including honeysuckle, buckthorn, Asiatic bittersweet, and others to aid in the reestablishment of native trees, grasses, sedges, and wild flowers. -Promote the growth of native vegetation to improve wildlife habitat, biodiversity, water quality, and overall health of the woodland ecosystem.

All ages welcome. No experience necessary. - Each event participant will be provided proper personal protective equipment and training as needed. What to Bring: It is recommended to dress for the weather. Wear long pants and closed-toe shoes. Bring a pair of gloves, if you have them - gloves provided for those without. In an effort to promote sustainability at this event, please bring a refillable water bottle.
