Introduction to Macroinvertebrates - Save Our Streams Training

Polk County Conservation

Even the tiniest streams can be home to small critters called aquatic macroinvertebrates. "Aquatic" means they live in water. "Macro" means you can see them without a magnifying glass. And "invertebrate" means they don't have a backbone. These itty-bitty animals, affectionately known as "stream bugs", are completely dependent on clean water – especially those that are pollution sensitive, or unable to survive in water contaminated with chemicals, excess salt, and other stuff that doesn't belong in waterways. In this training, we will review monitoring protocols, then wade into Camp Creek, exploring its habitats for macroinvertebrates. Once identified, their sensitivity to pollution will be assessed. With this information, participants will gain insight into the health of our stream ecosystems. After completion of this training, those interested in Save Our Stream certification will complete a protocol exam to become an official Izaak Walton League certified stream monitor! Polk County Conservation Water Quality field monitors will receive Benthic Macroinvertebrate I completion certificate.
